2º semestre

Online Teaching Techniques

The theme of this annotated bibliography are the online teaching techniques. In this my search and selection of articles and videos, references sought to present some pedagogical techniques used in CMC (computer mediated communication), critical analysis of them on its use in education today and tomorrow.

See below:

Paulsen, MF – The Online Report on Pedagogical Techniques for Computer-Mediated Communication

This online report on pedagogical techniques for computer-mediated communication has been prepared Morten Paulsen, as a result of his work as first speaker of ICDE-95 Online World Conference on Distance Education in 1995.
This will be possible to find reference to various pedagogical techniques that are used in adult education through distance learning. The educational applications of CMC are used to meet the demands of students, provide guidance, help solve problems of students, for transmission of tasks and assessments, facilitating the group discussion and the tutor, create rhythm of a similar study for group of students and encourage self-help among students.
The teaching technique is a means to achieve the objectives of education. The techniques are organized according to the four communication paradigms used in CMC: information retrieval, electronic mail, bulletin boards and online conferencing, and are classified according to the study of Harasim, “Collaborative Learning Horizon” 1998 that distinguishes the use of learning techniques from a single, one-to-one, one-to-many and many-to-many.

Collaborative Dialogue Technologies in Distance Learning – edited by M Felisa Verdejo and Stefano A. Cerri – NATO 1993

Book with a compilation of articles written by specialists in distance education, which would highlight the following chapter:
Part1 – Pedagogy and Learning Experiences – Pedagogy
1 – A Framework for Pedagogical CMC Programmes – Morten Paulsen et al.
This article presents a pedagogical enquadradamento for computer-mediated communication that includes the resources, techniques and teaching styles and the environment.
It results from a working group of authors, with the aim of establishing a pedagogical model for planning and analysis of a teaching program based on CMC. The article presents a basic guide to building a training program based on CMC. Not intended to create an ideal model, because in the opinion of the group is able to use various teaching techniques and styles in the same training program as it is possible to have different training programs based on the same techniques and teaching styles.

National Institute for Science Education – Collaborative Learning – Techniques

This institution has a session devoted to collaborative learning and presents a practical guide to the pedagogical techniques of collaboration in order to guide their teachers in their use. The guide was prepared for action in the classroom, but these techniques are capable of being applied in online education. The techniques that highlight the following are also mentioned in the article Online Education and Learning Management Systems: Global E-learning in a Scandinavian Perspective, Professor Morten Paulsen.

Group DynamicsIce breakersLectures

Through the website National Institute for Science Education found some evidence of teachers using distance education in their courses. Example of a case presented. In this article teachers report the gains achieved by the introduction of new technologies in training of their traditional disciplines.

Sheila P. Englebardt – Discussion Forums as a Learning Tool in a Graduate Course link

This article describes the experience in using the forum online at the School of Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The aim in using this tool for computer-mediated communication was to encourage the student’s speech about the course content, improve writing, and develop skills in the use of technology.
In this report, we find the interesting description of some problems encountered in this experiment, such as: A) the use of volunteer mediators and experts in discussion, B) time in connection with the preparation of a suitable schedule that meets the needs of current and specialists and C) students’ anxiety towards the use of technology and the publication of your comments.
In my opinion the problems B and C are fairly common in this technique pedagogical CMC.

Social Learning Academy – 100+ Examples of  the Use of Social Media in Learning  – link

On this site you can find the opinion of experts in online education on pedagogical techniques of your choice, highlighting the most used by the majority. Among them: blogging, shared calendars, podcasting, rss readers, mind maps collaborative, micro bloging, sharing photos, screen, presentations and videos, social bookmarking, social networking, collaborative editing of documents and presentations, personalized start pages and environments collaboration. By exploring the views of professionals, one finds also other very interesting tools for projects of distance education and not only …

Vídeo 1

This video produced in 2000, presents a forecast of what will be on Education in 2025. Virtual classrooms, where students will be providers of knowledge that is shared by all. The truth is that we are already very close to this reality and still 15 years away from the estimated date. I think personally that we will get there before that …

Video 2

Video was directed by Stephen Downes, presents 10 things that are possible to do in 10 minutes to be a better professional e-learning. Presents a sequence of solutions that are truly useful for distance education.

Video 3

This video is a critical use of technology in education without appropriate teaching methodology and techniques, resulting in no innovation to education, only one modernization useless. I think that discussion is still relevant, despite the increase in studies and research in this area, and in this case, our master is an example.

Conclusion: My impression of this selection of references on online teaching techniques is similar to that conducted in previous research on cooperative learning: despite having learned new things with this exercise, I feel that there’s more to search for and learn about the subject, because time was limited.
I am now more mature and I think this research will evolve further in coming

The production of our AB’s was for me the task more difficult we do at the beginning of course, because of all required reading lot of information and the most out of natural language. This was a complication in the interpretation of the content that I read.

Highlight in this review, the work of Cecilia, because I think is complete and will serve as inspiration for my next similar work.
I admire the ability to present information with a high level of depth despite the short period of time to perform the task.
I think it was well organized into themes that guide the understanding of articles.
Finally, the conclusion to the themes used is also important to present the views of the author of the analysis.
To conduct the work with this level of depth is a challenge for me.
Also highlight the work done by Joaquim Pinto that besides doing a good job, was concerned to translate their AB’s in Portuguese.

Another work that is relevant in my opinion is the work of Antonio Pedro, the uniqueness of your journal from images. He read more attractive and interesting.

Cooperative Freedom

This short video is a learning object (LO) developed for the discipline of PPEL Professor Morten Paulsen in the master that I am to attend.

I chose to present a practical example of the Theory of Cooperative Freedom of Professor Paulsen. The focus of the message is the challenge of learning to offer students with different interests, a proposed activity in each will be motivated to learn. The Education-line, through the Internet, enables the use of tools for collaborative work to balance the particular needs of students with group collaboration.

The video was first produced with Microsoft PowerPoint and then converted to video with Adobe Captivate, tools that I use at work.
